Microsilica – also known as Silica Fume – is an ultra-fine, amorphous form of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It is generated as a by-product during the production of silicon metal, ferrosilicon (grey), and zirconium dioxide (white). The starting material is high-purity quartz – either as river gravel or crushed quartzite – which is reduced in electric arc furnaces. The resulting material has a typical particle size of less than 45 µm and is characterized by its high reactivity and purity. In the refractory and foundry industries, microsilica is specifically used to significantly improve the density, mechanical strength, and above all the thermal resistance of refractory products. It also enhances shape stability under thermal stress, making it ideal for demanding high-temperature applications such as fireclay bricks or casting molds. Microsilica also improves the flowability of ceramic and casting masses, facilitating easier processing and ensuring uniform distribution in molded bodies. In the construction sector, microsilica is commonly used in high-performance concrete, special mortars, and concrete pipes. Its addition leads to significantly denser, more durable, and resilient concrete mixtures. Key Benefits Increased thermal resistance and strength in refractory products Improved density and reduced porosity Enhanced flowability and processing behavior Efficient use of high-quality industrial by-product Reduction of CO₂ emissions by lowering cement content in concrete
