Cinderballs are small, spherical rock fragments that are often found near volcanoes or lava flows. These rock balls are formed when molten rock (lava) solidifies in air or water, forming spherical structures. They are usually hollow or have cavities inside, created by rising gases during the cooling and solidification of the lava.

Cinderballs, also known as slag balls, are often used as a cost-effective filler material in construction and landscaping applications, particularly in drainage projects and as a lightweight aggregate in concrete mixes to reduce overall weight. Their porous structure allows for improved water retention and aeration in soils.
