Due to its high electron density, Barium Sulfate can be used as a positive X-ray contrast agent. Barium Sulfate is a white powder that is practically insoluble in water, acids and alkalis, while it can be dissolved in hot concentrated sulfuric acid up to 12 %. At high temperatures (> 1400°C), Barium Sulfate decomposes into barium oxide, sulfur dioxide and oxygen.
